September 2010

The refurbishment of Dumfries Ice Bowl delivered a comprehensive upgrade to the facility’s core ice-making infrastructure, improving operational efficiency, environmental control, and the overall skating experience. The project included the replacement of the existing refrigeration plant alongside the installation of a new ICEGRID cooling floor system, providing enhanced thermal performance and delivering consistent, high-quality ice conditions across the rink surface. Designed to improve cooling efficiency and reduce long-term operating costs, the new systems provide a reliable foundation for year-round ice sports and public skating activities.

To further enhance the arena environment, a modern desiccant dehumidification system was installed to maintain precise humidity control throughout the facility. By reducing airborne moisture and minimising condensation, the system improves visibility, protects the building environment, and creates a more comfortable experience for both skaters and spectators. The addition of a high-performance Low E ceiling also helps reduce radiant heat transfer into the rink space, lowering refrigeration demand and contributing to improved overall energy efficiency.

Alongside the major infrastructure improvements, the refurbishment also focused on enhancing the functionality and long-term performance of the venue. A new Athletica barrier system was installed to provide professional-standard player protection, improved durability, and enhanced sightlines for spectators across a variety of ice sports and recreational activities. The project also incorporated a modern snow pit system to improve the efficiency of ice maintenance operations and streamline snow removal during resurfacing cycles.

Together, these upgrades have transformed Dumfries Ice Bowl into a modern, energy-efficient, and future-ready facility capable of supporting community participation, athlete development, and high-quality ice sports experiences for many years to come.
