Eye on ice
Eye on the Ice – Precision Monitoring for Olympic-Grade Ice
Eye on the Ice is a wireless environmental monitoring system designed to ensure optimal ice conditions in high-performance venues. It was instrumental during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, overseeing ice quality across all five city competition venues—including Canada Hockey Place and the Richmond Olympic Oval—for events such as curling, figure skating, and ice hockey. By continuously tracking variables like temperature, humidity, air pressure, and brine flow, the system enabled ice technicians to receive real-time alerts and make precise adjustments, ensuring consistently high-quality ice surfaces throughout the Games.
Level Ice
The Laser Levelling System provides an even, consistent ice surface by adjusting the cutting depth automatically. The driver defines the ideal reference point on the ice surface. The transmitter sends a laser signal to the receiver which is based on the machine. The system automatically adjusts the blade position based on the difference between the reference point and the variable ice conditions.
A perfectly level ice surface ensures consistent glide, safer skating, and better overall performance. It improves ice quality, supports energy efficiency, and reduces maintenance costs — making it essential for both recreational and professional rinks.
Infra-Red
Different users require different ice conditions — figure skaters prefer around -2.8°C, while hockey players favour -5.5°C to -4.4°C. Traditional systems like brine return stats or slab sensors often struggle to keep up due to slow response times (thermal lag) or vulnerability to damage.
Infrared sensors, mounted above the ice, directly measure surface temperature in real time — delivering precise control, faster reaction, and no risk of damage. Operators can adjust settings manually, pre-programme, or use PC-based software, and even control remotely via modem.
Advantages:
Accurate surface temperature control within ±1 °C
Quick response to changing conditions
Supports custom temps for multiple user groups
Remote access and automation-ready (DDC upgrade available)
Energy savings via automated night-time setpoints
Clear, reliable temperature data for better operational decisions
With Red Eye Infrared Control, you’re managing the ice itself — not just what’s beneath it.
